* Jason Baffa, artist biography
Director, Jason Baffa, has been involved in the Arts for over 30 years. He received his first super 8mm camera at age seven and chose an early career path towards film and television production. Through his teen years he built Jason Baffa Films, which at the time, was producing sports highlight videos for athletes looking to procure Collegiate Scholarships.
Baffa trained at Todd A-O Sound, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and at the Universidad de San Luis in Madrid, Spain- he holds a BFA in Film Production from Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles, CA.
Through the 90’s Baffa worked at New World Entertainment in their development department which was partnered with Fox Studios, Steven J. Cannell Productions and Marvel Entertainment. His love of surfing, led him to the role of Show Producer on Fox Sport’s Bluetorch TV. Here, he contributed to over 167 hours of programming in 18 months and helped launch this first, daily action-sports magazine show.
In late 2001, he left Bluetorch to pursue his career as an independent filmmaker. The decision produced two internationally acclaimed feature documentaries that the surfing community has labeled, “modern classics”.
The first, the 2004 release, “Singlefin: yellow.” Described by Variety as, “The Red Violin meets The Endless Summer.” A solo effort with one Bolex 16mm film camera and some help from Water DP, Scott Kassenoff, the film tells the story of one yellow surfboard as shared across the globe by a group of friends. The project examines that cultural differences aside, the simple act of sharing can unite and celebrate the good in all.
By late 2004, Baffa had teamed up with long time friend, Mark Jeremias, to co-direct and d.p. his second effort, “One California Day,” under the Build Worldwide label. The four year, Super 16mm collaboration was released in late 2008 and was described as “visually stunning” by Yahoo News. The film explores California surf culture, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Both features enjoyed limited theatrical release throughout the world and are available on DVD home video, or online via Netflix & Amazon.
Baffa’s recent focus has been on developing new theatrical projects and evolving Jason Baffa Films as a client based production house.
His work as both director, cinematographer and editor encompass various globe-trotting projects including work for Patagonia Clothing,
Ford, Bear Naked Granola, Oakley, Fox Sports, Miramax Studios, Pabst Brewing, Pacifico Beer and a new documentary film
for Barefoot Wine titled, One Beach.
